According to the late Max Mathews, Bob Rocco was the only person to use the radio baton to conduct research into music for the deaf. This research began in 2006 and as of 2015 expanded to include adults with various disabilities.  

 In addition to that research, during 1984 Bob had several ‘firsts’ to his credit in the field of computer music performance:

     *  Bob became the first person in history to compose music for Max Mathews new Electronic Drum.

     *  He was the first person in history to learn to play the electronic drum and he was the only person to perform recitals with it.  (Max's first generation controller worked with a Z80 64k microcomputer and Krumar synthesizer. This original forerunner evolved into the radio baton over the next decades.)

     *  Also in 1984, on May 14, Bob became the first person in the history of New York University to perform an entire recital using a personal computer (Apple II 64k). All compositions were original.  For some of them, Bob ‘accompanied’  the computer on the piano.
